Worley has been selected to design and evaluate CO2 gathering, handling and sequestration facilities located along the Gulf Coast in Southeast Texas. Bayou Bend CCS LLC is a joint venture owned by Chevron, Equinor, and TotalEnergies to develop a carbon capture and storage facility in Southeast Texas.
Anew Climate, LLC announced a marketing agreement with Summit Carbon Solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, Anew will market carbon dioxide (CO2) removal credits generated from Summit Carbon’s novel Biomass with Carbon Removal and Storage project, which is expected to capture and sequester more than 160 million tons of biogenic carbon dioxide emissions from 50+ biorefineries across the Midwestern United States over the next decade.
Climeworks starts operations of its to-date largest direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) plant, Mammoth, in Iceland. It is the second commercial DAC+S facility of Climeworks and is about ten times bigger than its predecessor plant, Orca.
Northwestern University will lead the newest Midwestern hub, uniting prominent partners from research and industry. The Department of Energy (DOE) is supporting early-stage project development of these Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs. The Northwestern-led hub will test the feasibility of using nuclear energy as a more energy-efficient way to capture carbon dioxide.

Conestoga to host SAFFiRE cellulosic ethanol pilot plant

Conestoga Energy and SAFFiRE Renewables LLC announced on Nov. 16 their agreement for Conestoga to host SAFFiRE’s cellulosic ethanol pilot plant at Conestoga’s Arkalon Energy ethanol facility in Liberal, Kansas.

To help meet this need, a consortium of more than 40 organizations across industry, technology, academia, national labs, community, government, and labor was formed by Carbon TerraVault Holdings, LLC (CTV), a subsidiary of California Resources Corporation, to pursue Department of Energy (DOE) funding under its Regional Direct Air Capture (DAC) Hubs initiative to create the California DAC Hub, the state’s first full-scale DAC plus storage (DAC+S) network of regional hubs. In August 2023, the consortium was selected to receive $11.8 million in funding from the DOE, the largest amount of funding allocated to a California DAC project through this initiative. The first hub is targeted to launch in Kern County, California and the consortium will look to expand to other locations across the state.

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage: Securing North Dakota’s Energy Future Two core economic pillars of North Dakota are the energy and agriculture industries. However, both industries are historically carbon-intensive, meaning that a lot of carbon is generated during specific processes associated with these industries. Managing global carbon emissions is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our time. Many scientists are concerned that anthropogenic (human-made) greenhouse gases (GHGs) are affecting Earth’s climate. This concern is driving policies in the United States and around the globe, which are resulting in economic incentives and preferential financing for companies taking action to lower the carbon intensity of the commodities they produce. The challenge is to address anthropogenic GHG emissions while providing access to reliable, affordable, resilient energy and products. Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is one of the best technologies to address the challenge to decarbonize these industries while we continue to feed and power the world and grow the economic contributions of these cornerstone industries to our state.
